In 1979 Sensei Brian West started training in the art of Isshin-ryu karate with Sensei Joe Jennings, founder of Jennings Karate Academy, who trained under Isshin-ryu founder Tatsuo Shimabuku and Sensei Angi Uezu.
After serving a tour of duty in Okinawa, Japan, in the United States Marine Corps with honorable discharge, he returned to Rochester, NY, and soon became the instructor/operator of one of the Jennings’ dojos.
In 1996, Sensei West opened his own dojo, West Martial Arts, in Webster, NY (a suburb of Rochester). West Martial Arts currently shares the facility with Empire Martial Arts (Shotokan) located at 1270 Creek St, Webster, NY.
Sensei West teaches Isshin-ryu as his passion. He does not like karate politics and he treats all of his students the same. His students have to earn their belts, not to buy them. He provides super training and with tuition rate being half of that of other local karate schools.
With 28 years of martial art, Sensei West has been dedicated to learning and teaching Isshin-ryu karate to students of all ages. One of his main goals is to instill the core values and traditions in the art of Isshin-ryu karate. Improved self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment have been the two outcomes common to his students.
A few of his winning titles include:
-
1986 P.I.K.F. Kumite, and Kata Champion
-
1989 Jennings Karate Kumite, Kata, and Weapons Champion
-
1990 Isshin-ryu Karate Kumite, Kata, and Weapons Champion
-
1992 Angi Uezu Isshin-ryu Karate Kumite, Kata, and Weapons Champion
-

-
2005 IWKA World Kumite Grand Champion, Kata, and Bo-Sai Kumite Team Champion

Mr. Nguyen,
Thank you for your very kind gesture.
It was nice talking to you in Gatlinburg, TN. I don't know how you make it to all these tournaments!
It was also a real honor for me to be able to present Michael the "Young Male Karate-Ka of the Year" award. I have been a big fan of both Michael and Richard for several years. They are fine young men. You and Mrs. Nguyen have done an outstanding job.
I hope to see you all again soon. If you are ever in Louisiana, you are invited to visit us. Thanks again!
Best Wishes,
Clyde

You are blessed with good kids and very good martial artists. Who would have thought 42 years ago, I would be admiring two champions from Vietnam. You never know what life has in store for you. I was 17 when I was in your country, and scarred to death. God was good to me, and I came home.

It was great to spend time with the Nguyen family again in Tenn. Richard and Michael are a joy to be around. I always learn something new when I watch them perform. Lori and I look forward to seeing you again soon. I enjoy looking at the pictures and remembering the fun we had.

Nguyen, Sensei
Thank you so much for your comments. Also thanks for the wonderful contributions to the site by you and your family. You represent your dojo, sensei and self very well. Many martial artists both young and old could learn a lot by the examples you set. Please remember that if I can ever be of any help do not hesitate in asking.

Chau,
I would like to thank you, your family and Sensei West for supporting our tournament this year. As always it is a pleasure to see you and your wife. It is always exciting to see how well your boys do in the tournament and I also enjoyed watching Sensei West compete in the kata competitions.
Hope to see all of you next year.

West Sensei (Brian),
I just surfed onto your website and I have to say it was quite impressive. You and the Nguyen brothers are doing a great service to the Isshinryu system by representing all of us and Tatsuo Shimabuku's Karate in such a high caliber and impressive way.
After personally seeing the three of you perform in the ring and act like the professionals that you are out of the ring, I am honored and humbled to be part of this great system we call Isshinryu Karate-do. Keep up the good work, we're all very proud of your accomplishments.
Also, please let Chau and Ginny know that their contribution to the success of their two remarkable sons has not gone unnoticed and I commend them for it.
Yours in Budo,
H.P.
